What you can do
Your next steps to safeguard and protect glaciers
By Conny Kawohl
What can we do together?
Helping to save glaciers involves both individual actions and larger societal efforts.
Possible next steps
Advocate for climate action
Support policies and politicians that prioritise climate action, such as carbon pricing, renewable energy incentives, and conservation efforts.
Educate and share
Spread awareness about the importance of glaciers and the impact of climate change on them. Encourage others to take action and make environmentally conscious choices.
Support glacier conservation
Donate to or volunteer with organisations dedicated to studying and protecting glaciers, such as glacier research institutes or environmental NGOs.
Travel sustainably
When traveling, choose eco-friendly transportation options like trains or buses instead of planes, and minimise your environmental impact while exploring glacier regions.
Reduce carbon emissions
One of the primary drivers of glacier retreat is climate change, largely caused by human activities emitting greenhouse gases. Individuals can reduce their carbon footprint by using renewable energy, driving less, flying less, and supporting policies and businesses that prioritise sustainability.
Advocate on behalf of glacier ecosystems
Educate yourself about specific glacier ecosystems, and how their changing affects animal and plant life in the region. Support preservation efforts in these regions. You can also help with regional cleanup efforts and educating tourists alongside locals.
Monitor glacier health
Help us grow and enhance our database of glaciers or participate in citizen science projects. Support research efforts aimed at monitoring glacier health and understanding the impacts of climate change on these complex systems.
Support Renewable Energy
Advocate for and invest in renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, which don’t produce greenhouse gas emissions.
Reduce water usage
Glaciers are a vital source of freshwater for many regions. Conserving water in daily activities helps preserve this resource.
Reduce, reuse, recycle
Reduce consumption of goods, reuse items when possible, and recycle materials to reduce waste and the energy needed for production.
